James T. Butts, Jr. officially kicked off his campaign on Sunday to be re-elected as mayor of Inglewood.
Joined by an audience of roughly 150 supporters at his campaign headquarters on East Manchester Blvd. near downtown Inglewood, Butts said the city is on the right track and will continue “to define its own self-determination” under his leadership.
“Inglewood residents know that you don’t replace your best players in the most crucial part of the game and that you don’t take a professional and replace them with a novice and put them in charge of a quarter of a billion dollar budget,” Butts explained. “Inglewood residents like what they see and want to continue on the path of self-determination while creating generational wealth for their children and grandchildren. Promises were made by me when I ran and Inglewood residents can see the results everyday.”
Much development is underway, Butts told the standing-room-only crowd. The city is investing in public transit and continuing to attract new businesses. Inglewood is still in an “embryo stage” with more changes to come, he added.
Butts outlined five key priorities for his campaign: affordable housing, public safety, continuing to provide city services, public transportation, and continuing to build up the city’s infrastructure.
Under Butts’ leadership, Inglewood residents can look forward to 2023, when the NCAA Championship Bowl game will take place in Inglewood, as well as WrestleMania. By 2024, the Clippers will open a state-of-the-art NBA arena – The Intuit Dome – in Inglewood, followed in 2028 by the opening of the Olympic Games in Inglewood, with Olympic Basketball and Swimming competitions occurring in the resurrected City of Champions.
Butts became the city’s 12th mayor after his election in 2011.
The position has a four-year term and will be on Inglewood residents’ ballots November 8.
Butts won re-election in 2018 with 63 percent of the vote.
